Its's new
drama CD series from TEAM Entertainment, we can tell from the title that it
would consist of handsome guys. The interesting part is they take Rakugo as the
theme of this project. I didn't know any other publisher who take (Japanese)
verbal entertainment such as Rakugo into their drama CDs. Please tell me if you
know one. It's a new refreshing theme for drama CD, congrats TEAM Entertainment
for this new idea.
General theme is combining a story of handsome guy who works as rakugo
artist and their daily life, both on and off stage. Rakugo (落語) is come
from term Rakugoka (落語家) or the lone storyteller. They perform solo
telling a long and complicated comical story while sitting in seiza. They
brings paper fan and a small cloth on stage, the story involves two or more
characters depicted through pitch, tone and head movement of the storyteller.
They always performs in vaudeville theater. The monologue usually ends with a
narrative stunt like ochi (落ち) or
sage (下げ). We could summary that Rakugo is "a one
person sitcom". Rakugo has various styles;
the shibaibanashi (芝居噺) theatre discourses, the ongyokubanashi (音曲噺)
musical discourses, the kaidanbanashi (怪談噺) ghost discourses, and ninjōbanashi (人情噺)
sentimental discourses. In many of these forms the ochi, which is essential to
the original rakugo, is absent.
Don't get confused between the concept of Rakugo that adopted in this
CD with Manzai. Manzai (漫才) involves two performers, a straight man
(tsukkomi, 突っ込み) and a funny man (Boke, ボケ)trading
jokes around mutual misunderstandings, puns and other verbal gags. The
performer also bring the traditional prop, a paper fan called harisen (張り扇)
but only carried and used by the Boke. If you refer to stand-up comedy, Manzai
is the closest term to it. The basic differences is Rakugo artist are perform
solo and sitting while performing, Manzai artist are perform with partner and
standing up. What about this series? Maybe it's a combination between rakugo
and manzai.
Handsome
Rakugo is telling about the on and off duty of the rakugo artist in one
vaudeville theater leads by Okami-san, I don't get her actual name. They worked
in pairs on stage and somehow had interesting relationship off stage. The
heroine in this series didn't have much scene since it's focus on telling
stories. The heroine is a new worker in the theater who close enough with the
characters to get involved in a relationship and caught in incidents with them.
If you seek for romance, this series didn't have much of it. No specific
romantic interaction between the heroine (usually played by the listener) and
the characters except few lines, but not intimate. So this is an all ages drama
CD and a funny one, this series come into three main CDs.
